Our favorite family Halloween flicks

Well, the spooky season is here and with it the perfect opportunity to get around the TV with your family and watch a Halloween movie! We asked our staff for their favorite picks, in case you need some recommendations for those ghost and ghoul flicks.

Paranorman was a pick from a few of our staff, including Brittney from our Yerington Clubhouse. A boy who can speak with Ghosts, Norman is an outcast at his school. But, when he’s reached out to by a longdead girl accused of being a witch, he finds someone he can help. Stream for free on the Roku Channel or rent for $3 on Amazon Prime.

The Haunted Mansion

Who doesn’t love Eddie Murphy? Our Director of Membership, Kayla, tabbed The Haunted Mansion as one of her favorite Halloween movies. Inspired by the famous ride at Disney Land (ghost presidents, anyone?), The Haunted Mansion brings the Evers family to a place Jim Evers thinks he’ll be able to sell for a great commission. What they find is a curse they must help break for the stuck inhabitants. You can catch The Haunted Mansion on Disney+ or for rent on Amazon Prime, Redbox and Apple TV.

Tim Burton brings his spooky animation in full force with Hannah from Dayton’s pick, Coraline. Get your button eyes ready for a film about a girl named Coraline finding a secret door leading to a parallel world and, in return, a parallel family. Things seems better on the other side until her copy-cat parents try to stop her from leaving and Coraline must find her way back safe. This animated hit is available for free on the Roku Channel, or for rent on Amazon Prime for $2.99.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

What’s a Halloween movie list without the cult classic everyone’s at least heard of? We have Michaela from Silver Springs to credit on this one! Somehow, Meat Loaf and Susan Sarandon ended up in a movie together, featuring the latter getting stuck with a flat tire and stumbling into the mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his many, uh, interesting, housemates. Hulu has this one included with their subscription, but you can also get it on Prime, Apple TV and Redbox for $4.

Hocus Pocus

You knew this one was going to make the list! Hocus Pocus, as recommended by many, many of our staff, is an absolute classic that just doesn’t get old. Three witches, trapped away for many years, are freed on Halloween night by a group of curious teens. As they work to lure the children of the town to give them the youth they need to survive, Max, Dani and Allison try to get in their way just long enough for the sun to come up. This one is for rent just about anywhere, but can be streamed on Disney+ and Freeform!
