Fundraising underway for clubhouse, early learning center

After serving youth in the schools for 17 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley announced plans for a new campus, complete with clubhouse and an early learning center, in Silver Springs.

The announcement was made during a presentation at the Lyon County Commissioners Meeting Thursday morning. The facility will feature a full clubhouse for kindergarteners through high schools as well as an early learning center for infants through preschoolers. Each side of the facility will have multiple rooms and spaces dedicated to unique programs, activities, and age groups. The Club’s teen members will have 1,200 square feet of space dedicated just to them. The facility will also feature a shared commercial kitchen, large cafeteria and the latest tech to keep members engaged and safe. It would be constructed immediately adjacent to the community’s school on four acres at the corner of Topaz Street and Spruce Avenue.

“This is a monumental undertaking for our Club, but one that needs to be done,” Travis Crowder, the organization’s chief executive officer, said. “We are so grateful to the schools for their almost two decades of support, but we’ve outgrown our space and need to stretch out in a bigger home of our own. We’re in great talks with major donors to make this happen.”

On the early learning side, Silver Springs’ youngest will have a place to learn and grow. Three dedicated rooms will give parents with infants, toddlers or preschoolers places to be while at work. Kids will prepare for the next steps of their life with certified teachers in each classroom, running state-recognized curriculum. This would make the third early learning center for Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley, joining one in Yerington and one in Dayton, opening this fall.

The clubhouse will be highlighted by vaulted ceilings and a large, central recreation room. A commercial kitchen will handle both sides of the building, but the clubhouse will also feature a cafeteria. Two side program rooms will allow better targeted programming with more options for youth throughout the day, while a dedicated teen space will give that age group a place of their own to hang out and prepare for the next phase of life.

“Silver Springs has been my home my entire life,” Michaela Lyman, the clubhouse’s director, said. “Our community needs something like this so badly, and our kids are more than deserving. I can’t wait to see it come to life.”
