Larry Jackson has lived in Mineral County all his life. He went to school here, had kids here, and now even has grandkids here. When Larry retired from the Mineral County Water Department in 2008, he began spending his time volunteering around the community. Larry is assistant pastor at Trinity Temple Church of God in Christ. Larry also volunteers for TheCahs, and is the chaplain for the sheriff and fire departments. Now, he’s added something else to that list.
“I grew up here, my family grew up here,” he said. “I call it home.”
This, Larry says, is why he joined the community leadership committee to bring Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley down to Mineral County.
“I’ve always been involved with the children here,” he said. “This seemed like a great opportunity to be a part of.”
Larry believes a Boys & Girls Club would provide another avenue for kids and teens to go after school, staying out of trouble and getting help with their homework while spending time with friends. Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley currently serves Lyon County, but is working with locals to bring a site to Mineral County.
“A Club here would be great for the kids,” Larry said. Larry also said that, while many projects and organizations talk about coming into the community but seem to fizzle out, he thinks this one is different.
“If people get involved physically, monetarily, or just with their support, we could really see the benefits of this.”
