Club to offer Yerington summer preschool

YERINGTON, Nev. – Seeking to help meet the need for a safe, enriching place for children in Yerington, Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley will open a summer program for kids ages three and four.

The summer program is made possible thanks to a generous gift from the Estelle J. Kelsey Foundation. The program, featuring childcare, educational and enriching programming, and daily breakfast and lunch, will begin on June 29. Families can sign their children ages three through up for the program, free of charge, at bgcmasonvalley.org or by calling 463-2334.

“We have a long-running and very strong relationship with our friends at the Estelle J. Kelsey Foundation, and this is just another example of the great work they do,” said Travis Crowder, the Club’s chief professional officer. “We can’t thank them enough for stepping up to help our community.”

The Clubs summer preschool program will run for seven weeks, five days a week, beginning June 29 and wrapping up August 14. Two sessions, capped at eight kids each, will be offered from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Kids must be fully potty trained to register, and the 16 total spots are available on a first-come, first served basis.

“It’s a very tough time for just about everyone right now,” said Crowder. “School is out of session, and we know that the daycare programs in town, who do such a good job, have very long waiting lists. We wanted to be able to provide another option for families in Yerington looking for a safe place to send their young ones.”

The program will be housed in the Club’s current teen center, in separate classrooms upstairs. Programming will include arts and crafts, reading, and lots of playtime. Throughout, the Club’s staff will ensure that safety measures surrounding the current COVID-19 pandemic are in place, including frequent disinfecting, daily health screenings and social distancing. All Club staff will be in masks.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley opened its doors to all families with youth ages 5-18 on June 1 in Yerington, Dayton, Silver Springs and Hawthorne.
