NextEra Energy Resources funding STEM, food program this summer
YERINGTON, Nev. – A packed summer awaits Club Kids at Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley, thanks to the support of several companies with local ties and projects in the area. The big focuses at the Club this year include workforce development and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).
NextEra Energy Resources has donated to support this summer’s STEM sessions along with daily breakfast and lunch to anyone ages 18 and under when open all day. NextEra Energy Resources, the largest energy infrastructure builder in the U.S., is developing the proposed Mason Valley East Solar project north of Yerington.
“NextEra Energy Resources is proud to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley and the impactful work they do for kids and teens throughout the community,” said Tucker White, senior project manager of development at NextEra Energy Resources. “We’re especially excited to help support their STEM programming in hopes of inspiring the next generation to become the innovators and leaders of tomorrow. Programs like these provide the opportunity to explore new ideas and build confidence.”
SB Energy and Solv Energy’s contributions will make this year’s Junior Staff program possible. Junior Staff is the Club’s primary workforce development program. Teen members apply for a position and receive a stipend if selected, but can also participate as a non-paid member. These driven young people are then placed within their local clubhouses or a local business and, under guidance of other staff or business owners, learn basic jobs skills, what it’s like to have a job, and even a career area of interest. Weekly staff meetings are full of lessons like how to write a resume and cover letter, interview practice, and the Club’s financial literacy program, Money Matters.
NV Energy is taking career exploration into the virtual reality space this summer. Thanks to their support, teen and tween members will have access to virtual reality headsets full of software that allows them to try being a doctor, diesel mechanic, pilot and so much more. Other summer programming will be supported by a generous donation from EDF renewables.
